Modern computer crime represents a complex set of unlawful activities committed through information and communication technologies. It includes unauthorized intrusion into computer systems, theft of personal data, financial fraud, draining of bank accounts, interception of electronic communications, and the creation of fraudulent websites. Almost every individual owns a device—phone, tablet, or computer—that contains a significant amount of personal information: passwords, bank card numbers, photographs, correspondence, location data, and biometric identifiers. This turns digital devices into an integral part of private life and an attractive target for criminal interference.
One of the most widespread forms of cybercrime is identity theft. Once an offender obtains someone else’s personal identity, they can commit numerous offenses without the victim realizing it initially. Stolen data can be used to apply for loans, drain bank cards, create online accounts, purchase goods, carry out investment fraud, or forge profiles on social networks. Identity theft is particularly dangerous because, while in traditional fraud the perpetrator only impersonates someone else, in the digital environment the criminal effectively “takes” the victim’s digital identity.
Modern cybercrimes also include emerging technologies such as deepfakes. Through artificial intelligence algorithms, fake audio and video files can be created that perfectly imitate the appearance, voice, and movements of a real person. Such files can be used for extortion, defamation, political manipulation, fake news, romance scams, and the disruption of financial transactions. Our legal system still lacks explicit criminal provisions addressing such acts, as they represent a hybrid between identity theft, fraud, and offenses against the person.
Large-scale cybercrimes often involve the use of specialized bot networks. These are systems that automatically scan the internet for vulnerable devices and turn them into part of a centralized criminal infrastructure. In this way, a perpetrator can infiltrate hundreds of thousands of computers and exploit their processing power for data theft, virus distribution, or website disruption via DDoS attacks. This automation makes the crime more effective and more difficult to detect, as the individual trace of the offender nearly disappears.
Cyberattacks increasingly affect a state’s critical infrastructure. Disruption of electricity, paralysis of hospital systems, attacks against transportation networks or state portals can pose real risks to the lives and health of citizens. Here, cybercrime evolves from an economic threat into a socially dangerous and even strategic one. For this reason, many countries already classify certain digital offenses as crimes against national security.
