With the growth of digital technologies and easy internet access, crimes against intellectual property, including copyright infringement, have become highly relevant. In the modern digital environment, computer crimes involving unlawful distribution, use, or modification of protected works are a serious violation of both Bulgarian and international law.<\/p>\n
In Bulgaria, copyright protection is primarily regulated by the Copyright and Related Rights Act (CRRA), while some forms of infringement committed via computer means also fall under the provisions of the Criminal Code (CC) \u2013 especially Section VII \u201cCrimes against Intellectual Property\u201d and Chapter IXa \u201cComputer Crimes.\u201d<\/p>\n
Forms of computer crimes related to copyright:<\/strong><\/p>\n Illegal copying and distribution of protected works.<\/strong> Hacking and downloading paid content.<\/strong> Creation and distribution of pirated software.<\/strong> Distribution of content via platforms or websites.<\/strong> Criminal liability:<\/strong> In aggravated cases, where the act is committed for commercial purposes, on a large scale, or by an organized group, the punishment may reach up to eight years\u2019 imprisonment and higher fines.<\/p>\n The investigation of computer crimes related to copyright requires advanced technical expertise, digital trace analysis, and international cooperation.<\/p>\n Such crimes pose a serious threat to the digital economy and cultural industry. A common form is the unlawful distribution of music, films, software, and books via torrent sites, file-sharing platforms, or unlicensed streaming services.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n
Bypassing software protections, DRM systems, passwords, or other measures is treated as unlawful access and qualifies both as copyright infringement and as a computer crime under Arts. 319a ff. CC.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

According to Art. 172a CC, any person who, without the consent of the copyright holder, reproduces, distributes, uses, or records protected works shall be punished with imprisonment of up to six years and a fine of up to 10,000 BGN, as well as confiscation of the items used to commit the crime.<\/p>\n
